Belmont Church Plog

I like to read a lot. I read all sorts of material from varying points of perspective on a wide variety of subjects. I enjoy staying current and connected with the world in which we live. So, two months ago I created a Twitter account. Now, instead of popping all over the cyber world to read things I’m interested in, I simply follow them on Twitter. I have all the news, latest magazine articles and blogs brought to my fingertips on this pocket sized computer we sometimes also use as a phone. You could say I’m connected and tethered at all times to the news and world around me.

Last weekend my wife asked if I could make a quick run to Wal-Mart for some diapers, wipes and a gallon of milk.

As it turns out I was at Wal-Mart at the wrong time. You know those times when you are guaranteed to stand in line a minimum of 20 minutes no matter what aisle you choose?

So there I was with my diapers, wipes, gallon of milk and my Twitter account. I spent the next quarter of an hour scrolling through and reading different articles and blogs about the world in which we live. Meanwhile swarms of people and life were moving peripherally all around me.

I paid for my diapers and now warm gallon of milk and as I walked out the door I felt the gentle prodding and questioning of the Lord…

“Andy, what if I wanted you to pray for someone? What if someone was in need of simply seeing the returned look of kind eyes and a friendly smile? …Son, would you have known?”

As I prayed a few moments later in the parking lot the Lord continued… “I don’t mind or object to you being connected as you say…but remember, you are salt and you are light…take the time to first be aware of the world and of the life that is happening right around you… within your eyesight, and within your ear shot…I want you to be connected and tethered to my Spirit first and foremost. When I said, ‘the Kingdom of God is among you’ that still holds true to the Here and Now… today. You’ve been given the gift to walk in my Kingdom and to share it. Use your time wisely. Carry on. I love you.”

Jesus, we thank you that you long and desire for each of us to be connected and tethered to your leading through your Holy Spirit. We thank you for this amazing gift and wonderful reality. We ask You to help us. Help us be aware of when we can sprinkle some salt, shed some light, and leak a whole lotta love.

So true Andy! This whole ‘at the touch of our fingers’ connections to all the medias floating out there in cyberspace keeps us disconnected from the real human touch experiences of God’s divine appointments with the Holy Spirit leading us into the lives of people right in front of our eyes. Praising God you saw and shared! Good word Brother!

I just read an article in the January Guideposts written by a Nashvillian named River Jordan about praying for strangers. She prays for strangers at the market, when she is out doing errands, etc. It struck home with me about how many opportunities we miss by not being mindful of the people around us.
